Tugnut

Golden Chopper
Independent

9/10, exceptionally well crafted heavy (yet fun) Metal

6 tracks, 24:30, Heavy Metal with a twist

I intentionally requested this disc based on the comparison to Mr. Bungle, a band of which I am a great fan, and my hopes were not let down. Of course, they lack the multi-dimensional, genre-fusing production techniques that fill Mr. Bungle's albums, but if Tugnut did that too, I wouldn't be nearly as impressed. However, they do manage to make some seriously heavy noise, more often than I think Mr. Bungle manages to do. Another worthy comparison would be to Dog Fashion Disco, who also takes great inspiration from the Bungle crew.

Anyways, I must congratulate these fine Ontario boys on creating an album that raises the interest level to a peak right from the opening wail, and never lets it drop through all six tracks. And speaking of wails, Joe and Steve have amazing vocal ranges. Mike Patton would be proud, I'm sure. Not only that, but the lyrics are just the sort you would expect from a band like this. An excerpt from 'Shakers': "I brought my tapes and my pants I even brought my umbrella just in case it rains did I mention that it's purple I am a man that's made of lightning my reflex is faster than the world…" etc. The 'Stream Of Consciousness' style in which they are written is quite befitting of the music. It's very reminiscent of bands like Canvas, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Shamelady (whom I also reviewed). Their music is complex to boot, and kudos go out to them for their ability to stop and start in different time signatures and styles with the greatest of ease. That takes many hours of practise, and their dedication to their art shows.

Anyone who is a fan of the other bands mentioned in this review, or who likes abnormal (and crushing) metal is advised to support these fellows by buying their albums and spreading the word.

As a final note, there is a link on their website to Ontario Metal. Can you feel the love?
